My journey to becoming a physical therapist began with a book. Becoming a Supple Leopard by Dr. Kelly Starret. This book breaks down the principles of movement systems that provides a blueprint for safe efficient movement across not just sports, but everyday life activities. According to Dr. Kelly Starret, “Unlike a human, a leopard doesn’t need to prepare for movement. It doesn’t need to warm up; it doesn’t have to foam roll; it doesn’t have to raise its core temperature—it’s just ready. Its full capacity is available at all times.” We as humans do not have that luxury, but that does not mean we cannot obtain the knowledge and skills necessary to train our body to work to its full physical capacity. This can be done through improving our motor control, range of motion, and understanding of the movement systems that would further allow us to perform at any given time during any given activity. Being an avid basketball and soccer player, as well as a boxer, this is what had planted the seed for me to further seek out ways in which I could improve my athletic performance beyond the knowledge I already had.
