The foundations of value based care include health promotion, leadership, advocacy,  social responsibility, clinical reasoning, and parttaking in evidenced based practice. Together, these exhibit behaviors that will commensurate the role of a doctoring care profession. They provide the building blocks toward growth and development, becoming a role as a consultant, the ability to build a career around compassion, and a passion for learning and teaching, with the goal being to contribute to the greater good of the community and healthcare.

Planned Career Development and Lifelong Learning

  • Demonstrate commitment to learning and collaborating with community clinicians

Professional and Personal Development Timeline

Long term: Spend 6 months in India and help those in need and continue traveling to disadvantaged countries to provide care.

Mission and Vision Statement: LEARN MORE. DO MORE. BE MORE.

MISSION

Learn more.

I will learn more by taking on the role of a lifelong student and learner. I will utilize the best methodologies and EBP that evolve within the ever-changing field of medicine. I will better myself as a healthcare professional and contribute toward excellence in the future of physical therapy by earning more than the bare minimum CE course requirements and obtaining certifications.

Do More.

Do more through use of these best-known methodologies and EBP to inspire others in helping them help themselves in reaching new heights. With experience, I will gain the skills necessary to be able to provide my patients with the compassion, care, knowledge, and resources needed to help them unlock their full potential. I vow to take exemplary measures to eliminate barriers within my control, and thus limit doubt in those with whom I work. I will help my patients achieve greatness.

VISION

Be More.

I will be more by taking pride in my accomplishments, but never settling. My vision is to travel the world as a movement systems expert, contribute toward health promotion, and offer my knowledge to those who are economically disadvantaged. It is my social responsibility to educate, advocate, and provide pro-bono services for those in need. I will do this throughout my career and give back to communities both foreign and domestic.

How this influenced my development an SPT:

I have a hunger to learn. I’m excited to see where life will take me and how it will contribute toward developing me into becoming a better physical therapist. In addition, these goals and aspirations come from some amazing therapists and professors that are part of the UVM faculty. Their passion and love for the profession is contagious and their love to teach is admirable. I strive to be able to share my love and knowledge of the profession as well as my expertise in the same way that they do in hopes to aspire others to be the best version of themselves and the best therapists they can be.

Role as a Consultant

  • Lead and be a part of an interdisciplinary team and provide input in relation to rehabilitation outcomes for patients/clients.

Physical Therapy Assistant:

Description: Under the supervision of a physical therapist, I was asked if I would like to take on a job to co-treat a 23-year-old who had cerebral palsy.  I had just recently been accepted into PT school, and I thought this would be a great learning opportunity and a proactive way to learn about CP. While working with him and talking to his parents I got to know where his strengths and weaknesses were. As he progressed and gained strength and confidence in his abilities, he voiced that he wanted to work toward becoming more independent while being on school campus. Before this, he was dependent on his mom to drive to and from campus during lunch breaks to help him with toileting and navigating long distances around campus. What started as a maintenance program with PT, then turned into a team-based approach with his parents, primary care, occupational therapist, as well as a massage therapist to best help him obtain these newfound goals. With this opportunity I got to work closely with an interdisciplinary team and provide input on this individual’s rehab outcomes based on our time together.

How this influenced my development an SPT:

This influenced my development as an SPT by giving me first-hand experience in working with individuals with CP. I got to play a critical role in bringing on a team of other providers to help this individual reach his goals. I learnt the importance of empowering the patient and giving him the confidence in himself and his abilities to participate in the activities that were important to him. I got to work closely with his family, and as a team were able to provide him with the tools he needed to become more independent.

Teaching and Learning + Entrepreneurial Spirit

  • Establish partnerships to promote excellence and compassion as a keystone of physical therapy practice

Establish a non-profit organization guided toward helping the underserved

Description: My dream is to build a non-profit clinic in India where people who have less access to healthcare can come and come get screened and treated. They would have access to an open gym and come and go as they please. I would like to develop partnerships with local clinics and PT’s, and even travelling ones, to contribute toward making India a healthier place and support the cause. I would hope for this to be successful enough that we can open more than one clinic in India to help the smaller villages and eventually have others contribute toward the cause.

How this influenced my development an SPT:

We come into this profession with the goal being to help people. This influences my development as an SPT because I feel like we lost the opportunity to serve the underserved due to COVID-19 restrictions. One of my professors, Becky Ouellette Morton’s professionalism IV class was originally established to do just this and because of COVID we could not participate in community service.  In this class we were presented with a book and movie that demonstrated the power of a vision and how much impact we truly can have in making this world a better place. It was this class that sparked such high aspirations on what I hope to one day achieve and expand.
